It’s probably not something you think about often, but makeup, just like food, has an expiration date, usually indicated by the symbol of an open jar. In the symbol, the expiration date is indicated: ’18 M’, for example, means that you can use the product until up to 18 months after having opened the packaging. Expired makeup products are not only less effective, they can also cause some serious skin issues, like a rash, an allergic reaction, irritation and even (eye) infections.

I made a list of the average expiration date of each type of makeup product. However, you should always check the product itself because the expiration dates can vary from brand to brand. I also added a few tips that I often apply myself.

FOUNDATION – 6 to 18 months

Foundations in pump bottles are the safest, because the chance of bacteria contaminating the product is a lot smaller than in jars, since your hands don’t really touch the product in the bottle. The same goes for moisturizer.

CONCEALER – 12 months

It’s very important not to apply the product straight from the jar onto the blemish with your fingers, because this could create a true breeding ground for bacteria. Always use a concealer brush, makeup sponge (there are even mini sponges designed especially for applying concealer) or a Q-tip.

BLUSH AND POWDERS – 12 to 24 months

If, like me, you love using cream blushes, you need to be careful, since they tend to go bad more quickly. Bacteria will multiply more easily in a moist and preferably warm environment. So keep your cream blush in the fridge and the bacteria under control. Dry, loose powders can be used the longest, but I personally prefer cream blushes, since their result looks much more natural.

EYESHADOW – 12 to 24 months
It’s very important to regularly clean your eyeshadow brushes (and other makeup brushes). There are blush cleansers designed especially to both clean and desinfect your brushes. Our eyes are most prone to bacterial infections, so cleaning your eyeshadow brush is a must, not necessarily every day, but at least once a week. Invest in a beautiful eyeshadow palette, so you can switch it up every once in a while.

Eyeshadow palette: Naturally Glam Eye Shadow Kit, jane iredale, €59,90
Brush cleansers: M.A.C, €11,00; Hema, €4,50 and Kruidvat, €2,99

EYE PENCIL – 24 months

The golden rule here is to sharpen your eye pencils with an appropriate eye pencil sharpener. Sometimes these are complimentary when you buy an eye pencil. This way, your pencil stays clean and less prone to contamination. Do not use a regular pencil sharpener: these are less hygienic, and the size of your average pencil sharpener might not fit your eye pencil, especially not those jumbo ones!

Eye pencil: Eye Kajal, 01 Black Saffron / Vanille, Victoria Beckham x Estée Lauder, €32,50
Eye pencil sharpener: Hema, €3,00

MASCARA – 3 months
With mascara, you should always be extra careful. Since our eyes are most prone to bacterial infections, mascara presents the biggest risk. When your mascara starts to smell off, it’s usually already expired. When it has already dried up, even before the expiration date, it’s also better to just throw it out.

Mascara: Clinique High Impact Lash Elevating, 01 Black, €23,90.

LIPSTICK – 18 to 24 months

You could even use your lipstick up until 4 years after first-time use, as long as you store it in a cool place, where bacteria are less likely to multiply. You could, for example, store your favorites in the fridge, so you can enjoy them as long as possible.

Lipstick: Rouge Coco, Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour, 474 Daylight, Chanel, €37,00
Lipgloss: Rouge Allure Ink, Matte liquid Lip Colour, 158 Highway, Chanel, € 7,00
